Tabs must hold the part through the last risky motion yet leave an edge that can be removed and finished predictably. Size and place them from part mass, force direction, grain, remaining frame strength, tool access, and the planned removal method.
Define What the Tabs Must Resist
Classify each part before assigning tabs. A large rectangular panel that remains supported by a rigid sheet needs a different retention plan from a narrow ring, a small nested ornament, or a part whose final contour lies close to a show edge. Tab count should follow the ways the part can translate or rotate after most of its perimeter is free.
Size Tabs for Material and Cleanup
Place bridges where the tool can approach and leave cleanly and where hand finishing has access. Avoid tight inside corners, thin end grain, visible curves, mating edges, and regions that will later receive hardware. On wood, locate tabs with grain and breakout direction in mind; on plastics, consider whether removal will crack or stress-whiten the edge.

Place Tabs Away From Weak and Finished Features
Width is only one part of tab strength. Remaining height, material thickness, grain direction, contour angle, cutter diameter, and the amount of stock already released all affect retention. Build a small ladder of widths and heights in the real stock, then remove them with the intended method rather than choosing from a generic CAM preset.
Account for Toolpath Direction and Final Separation
Preview the entire cut order. A tab that is adequate early in the job may carry the full part after neighboring profiles remove sheet stiffness. Conversely, too many heavy bridges can make the operator pry against the finished edge. The retention plan should keep the part still until a controlled removal step, not make separation difficult at any cost.
If cleanup around every tab dominates the job, compare CNC router bits suited to the verified feature by tip geometry and flute access before adding more retention points.
Inspect Tabs Before the Sheet Is Released
Inspect both the machine-side evidence and the removed edge. Record whether the part shifted before completion, whether the tab tore below the finished contour, and how much sanding changed the dimension. If tab cleanup consumes a tolerance or damages a coated face, move the bridge or change the retention method rather than accepting more handwork.

Standardize Removal and Edge Repair
Save tab geometry as part-specific production data: quantity, position, width, remaining height, stock identity, removal tool, and accepted edge. Reuse it only when the part scale and material behavior remain comparable. Small parts, brittle sheet, and thin laminates deserve a new coupon even if the cutter is unchanged.
